How to rent a YouBike bicycle in Taipei
Register
You will need to first register at the Kiosk (on the left of photo). Once only. English and Mandarin language displayed. Warning: it's impossible to read the screen of the Kiosk when the sunlight is bright.
Left side: Kiosk to register |
To register you will need A) a Taiwanese mobile phone number and B) an Easy card (cashless payment card). It's definitely worth getting an Easy card in any case, for using public transport. Ask for one at any convenience store, and hand the cashier some cash to load onto your Easycard (suggest $500-1,000 NT).
Choosing a bike
Follow the instructions on the display panel: touch the panel with your Easycard. You will also need to touch the panel in the same way, when you end the rental period, to complete the payment. (Meanwhile, if you somehow lost the bike, you are liable for $9,000. Don't worry about it, bike theft is extremely rare in Taipei (unlike, say, London).
new style |
You need to notice whether your bike is OLD style (see photos) tap the sensor NEXT to the bike) or NEW style (tap the sensor ON the bike). The reason you need to notice is, these two designs are NOT physically interchangeable. When you finish with the bike, when you come to 'dock' your bike, you can only return it to the suitable old or new bike dock. With that proviso, you don't have to return to the exact same location you started out at, you can leave your bike at any YouBike stand in town, on condition that it is the suitable style, old or new.
TIP: the bikes come with a locking system. Use it to lock your bike while you pop into a shop, rather than terminate the rental at a YouBike stand. Once you return your bike to the stand and tap your EasyCard to finish the payment, the software doesn't allow to rent another bike there for 15 minutes.

Where to buy practical items in Tianmu / Shilin
Hola |
For larger items, head to IKEA for the meatballs, and then take a look in NITORI, the Japanese furniture store just beside it 宜得利家居 台北敦北店, which is arguably preferable to IKEA. Similar prices, good product quality, more enthusiastic service, less exhausting to walk around. Not much English spoken though.
Pizza in Tianmu
We only have one enthusiastic recommendation for eating inside:
1. Il Vicino
Eat-in or takeway, cosy place. No. 59號, Section 7, Zhongshan N Rd, Shilin District, Taipei City, 111
111台北市士林區中山北路七段59號
2. Faust Pizza is good for takeaway, few tables outside, regular clientele among westerners and locals.

2. Kingstone books

Short cultural visits in Taipei
My favourite four half-day trips from Tianmu
1. Beitou Library
eco-friendly wooden library, a beautiful building in a scenic part of town.
How to get there. Take the MRT on the red line in the direction of Tamsui and change at Beitou, one stop from the destination XinBeitou ("new Beitou"). As you exit the MRT, the library is about 200 metres straight ahead of you, enclosed by Beitou park.
Ksitigarbha, guardian of children and of deceased children |
Combine the visit with a gentle stroll up the hill toward Puji Temple (pic), the Japanese Buddhist temple. A few eateries help while away a very pleasant time.
There is a famous Beitou hot spring, open to the public (mixed gender, wear swimming costumes); however it is often unpleasantly crowded, you would do better elsewhere, such as Emperor Spa Xingyi Road.
2. National Concert Hall, National Theatre, Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, Liberty Square.
Stunning architecture, jaw-dropping scale. The Concert Hall ground floor contains a branch of the good restaurant chain Chunshuitang, plus at the opposite end is a decent small coffee shop, next to the box office. (This cafe is better than the one inside the nearby National Theatre). You can easily buy tickets to a concert, show, ballet etc at the box offices. Culture vultures might like to know that there is a very good specialist arts library underneath the National Theatre, enter via the underground car park; you need to register at the entrance to the library in order to access their collection. Highly recommended, a cultural haven.
3. Culture University ("Wen-hua")
Great views of Tianmu from Lane 219 Section 7 Zhongshan N Rd
Traveling up the mountain from Tianmu is a steep and scenic adventure, with some really great views and fresh air.
By the time you reach Wenhua University, (also close to TES senior school) it feels noticeably cooler / colder at this altitude. Close by the uni are several eateries, in what was formerly US services accommodation. For quiche and lemon meringue pie I recommend Yannick, No. 481號, Lane 4, Zhangchun St, Shilin District, Taipei City, 111
Yannick has very good lemon meringue pie |
inside Yannick |
Tianmu Historic Trail is a very pleasant hiking trail joining this upper mountain area to Tianmu (the very top of Zhonghsan North Road section 7). Allow an hour for a leisurely downhill stroll. Take water with you.
Tianmu Trail marker at the top of the trek |
You may meet some monkeys on the hike: the general advice is to ignore them, not to stare them in the face, and definitely not let them see your food or drink.
4. Taipei Confucius Temple 臺北孔子廟
Since Confucianism as a belief system / way of thinking is so deeply embedded in Taiwan, it is well worth a visit here to get to understand things better. Inspiring museum- style displays, some interactive and child friendly, with unusually good english translations. A cinema shows educational movies. For information about ceremonies etc, click hereNo. 275, Dalong St, Datong District, Taipei City, 103
Best Cake Shops in Tianmu
(see also Cafes in Tianmu)
Our local favourites
1. ISM. Excellent quality cakes. Take-away
No. 21-4號, Lane 8, Tianmu E Rd, Shilin District, Taipei City, 111
2. Paris 15eme
This challengingly named cake shop is found inside Takashimaya department store, staying on the ground floor (not downstairs toward the food court), on the left side (closer to the baseball stadium).
A refined cake shop, very suitable for high end adult treats.
3. Wendels German bakery, close to Sogo / Zhishan MRT. Reliably good cakes and bakery items such as scones. Good choice for birthday cakes.
No. 5號, Dexing W Rd, Shilin District, Taipei City, 111.
